Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most adored members of the British royal family.  However she was no stranger to the British royal family, having reportedly played with Prince Andrew and Prince Edward as a child while her family rented Park House, an estate owned by Queen Elizabeth II.  Prince Charles was thirteen years her senior. Diana became Lady Diana Spencer in 1975 after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer.  Though known to be quiet and shy, Diana expressed a great fondness for children and after completing finishing school in Switzerland, she returned to London to eventually become a kindergarten teacher. When Diana and Prince Charles met and began to pursue a courtship, the press and public were fascinated by this seemingly odd couple. They married on July 29, 1981 in a televised ceremony broadcast throughout the world.  Millions of viewers were entranced with what appeared to be Britain’s fairy tale wedding of the century.  Though the marriage produced two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, it was not to be a happily-ever-after ending.  The couple divorced in 1996and even after the divorce, Diana maintained a high level of popularity.  She devoted herself to her sons and her charitable causes.  In 1997 Diana had a serious romance with Egyptian producer and playboy Dodi Al-Fayed.  While the two were visiting Paris, they were involved in a tragic car crash as they attempted to escape the paparazzi.  Diana, Al-Fayed and their driver were all killed. Diana endeared herself to the public through her warmth and caring.  As the wife of Prince Charles, Diana not only gave birth to the future British king, she became a princess to the people of the world.
