At thirty one years of age, Jacqueline Kennedy was about to impact not only the United States as the 35th First Lady but also become an iconic symbol of fashion for women all over the world. Her clean suits with hems at mid-knee, three-quarter length sleeves with notched collared jackets, sleeveless sheath style dresses, above-the-elbow gloves, low heeled pumps, famous pillbox hats and even her longer length bobbed hairstyle, soon became an overnight success around the world and was quickly coined as the "Jackie look". Though she primarily wore designs of famous designer Oleg Cassini, Jackie also wore ensembles of designer legends such as Dior, Givenchy and Chanel.
Jackie's classic elegant yet sophisticated style was also evident in her large exquisite and priceless jewelry collection. She favored unique jewelry selections by American jeweler Kenneth Jay Lane, French jeweler Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier.
Though Lane was often considered the king of bling, much of the jewelry he designed for Jackie was in her distinct classic style. Lane was a master at reproduction design but interestingly these reproductions were not identical to the originals. Each were made with slight differences in the stone choice used in the replicated pieces of jewelry but Lane always captured the extravagant
and colorful style. Sotherby's quotes Lane who says Jackie specifically commissioned these pieces from him. She was apparently taken aback with what the cost would be, so Lane agreed to absorb the cost of making the model if he could use the designs in his own collections. Jackie was quite amused when she later saw her necklace used on the television series 'Dynasty'. With matching faux earrings, the suite of these Lane reproductions were valued at $1,000-1,500. The entire suite later sold for an amazing $90,600.
